About Target_elongation

Target_elongation_across_beams is a single target data export variable.

It is a measure of a multibeam target's length-to-height ratio and calculated using the Target_length and Target_area properties as:

This dimensionless property provides a value that describes the geometric elongation of the target. It is useful for distinguishing elongated targets, such as krill or fish, from noise or debris. It can also be useful in setting target property thresholds for filtering and classification.

If either Target_length or Target_area property is no_data, Target_elongation will also be no_data.

Target elongation is a useful metric for:

  • filtering and classifying targets based on their shape (e.g., distinguishing elongated targets like fish or krill from noise or debris)
  • enhancing target detection and tracking processes by refining the criteria used to differentiate target types.

This property is enabled by default for new Echoview files. For existing files, it may need to be enabled manually on the Target page of the Variable Properties dialog for the Multibeam Target Detection operator.
