New in Echoview 4.10 for all users

Welcome to Echoview 4.10!

We are pleased to announce the release of Echoview version 4.10. In this release, we continue our development of Echoview by improving the automation of tasks in our scripting module and with Echoview virtual variables; providing new visualization tools such as the on screen Integration line and a Threshold response graph, and supporting new instruments.

New features are presented in two categories:

New features for all users
New features for users of specific echosounders

Virtual variable enhancements

The following enhancements extend the usefulness of virtual variables when doing complex analyses of your data.

User interface enhancements

These enhancements give you better control over Echoview's workspace. They make your work easier by giving you easily accessible information about your data.

  • A new onscreen analysis tool, the Integration line display, helps you to visually evaluate the relative contribution of NASC from pings in single beam echograms.
  • Lines, virtual lines and sounder-detected bottom lines can now be viewed and modified within the Variables and Geometry window. This development is the start of a series of enhancements for lines, line operators and line scripting in Echoview.
  • A message reminder appears on the Echoview status bar, when new messages are available in the Message dialog box.
  • Support for user defined file locations for templates and color schemes.
  • While viewing 3D regions in a scene, easily delete unwanted 3D regions.
  • Enhancements to the Echogram tools toolbar which make the use of multi-faceted tools for lines, region editing and region classification clearer and simpler.
  • You can now select the number of decimal places to display for range and depth in the Details dialog box.
  • Setting to output empty single target pings for Single target exports. When checked, the export file will contain empty pings; the file can then also be correctly re-imported into Echoview.
  • Where a short name is available, it will be used in the variable list on the Operands page of the Variable Properties dialog box.
  • Data files with marker regions can load slowly. Uncheck the Create marker regions from data files option on the Classes page of the EV File Properties dialog box to improve Echoview's performance with such files.

New Threshold Response graph

The Threshold Response graph is a tool that can help you probe the composition of regions or selections in Sv echograms. The graph plots Sv threshold values against NASC for a selection.

One of the potential uses of this graph is when a school is composed of two different species. A graph of the school region will show a visual jump in NASC as the Sv threshold changes. A value can be chosen from the graph to use as minimum threshold in order to allow school detection of only one of the two species.

New scripting commands

These new settings enhance the scripting module (deprecated scripting model for Echoview 5.0) and makes scripting with Echoview more powerful.

  • A script setting for the TVG Range Offset when applying a Calibration offset to a variable.
  • New scripting settings for variable properties and virtual variable properties. In particular: Data generator, Data range bitmap, Convolutions, Mask, GLCM texture feature and calibration inheritance.
  • When importing a file through script, you can now specify a customized name to identify the object once imported.
  • Simplified path specification for removing data files. You now only need to specify the filename and fileset.
  • The undocumented StartMinimized function can now be found in the optional scripting functions section of the help file. This function saves you time by running Echoview with minimized windows.
  • For the preactions PrePickLine and PreCreateLineRelativeRegion, the parameters start ping and stop ping are now optional.
New scripting automation model We are pleased to introduce support for scripting using COM object automation. The key advantage of this automation model is that Echoview can pass information back to the script. It is now possible for scripts to make informed decisions, request decisions from the user, and pass information from Echoview to the user. If you are interested to know more about COM automation, please contact us for further information. It is important to note that COM automation is in a highly developmental state and that we cannot guarantee backwards compatibility in future versions.

Support for new file formats and file format enhancements

This release introduces support for a number of new file formats. Echoview becomes more versatile by handling data from an even wider range of echosounders.

  • New support for Simrad SH80 and Simrad SP70 data formats.
  • New support for Kongsberg Mesotech SM20 data files.
  • New support for Kongsberg EM 3002D data files.
  • Echoview adds empty pings when there are missing pings between HAC detected single target pings, this avoids bugs for HAC single target data in echogram display and with fish tracking.

Data generator operator enhancement

New algorithms and settings for the Data generator operator now offer the options of creating a TVG curve with or without a user defined TVG_override value and/or sample offset value. This may benefit the noise analysis of and noise mitigation strategies for your data.

In addition, references on the topic of Background noise removal have been added to the Echoview help file.

Resample operator enhancement

A new setting to use the start and stop ranges from operand 1 for the Resampled virtual variable. This offers a simple way to match ping geometries.

Fish length operator examples of species specific constants

A table of species specific constants and references are tabled on the Fish length algorithm page. This information may provide some guidance in the use and applicability of the fish length operator to your data.

Integration algorithm enhancement

Expanded the availability of the integration algorithm for Multibeam cruise scanning. The H-mode beam type is now supported.

Enhancement to TS variable calibration settings.

Single target detection operators use the Transmitted pulse length in their calculations to produce a virtual variable containing detected single targets. Echoview now supports this setting on the Calibration page of the Variable properties dialog box for all TS variables. File formats with this new support are:

  • ASCII.ts.csv files
  • Biosonics files
  • HAC data files
  • HTI sample data files
  • Simrad data files containing TS Q telegrams
