About Target_elongation_across_beams

Target_elongation_across_beams is a single target data export variable.

It is a measure of the multibeam target's length-to-height ratio, calculated using the length measured across beams. It is defined as:

Elongation across beams equation

This property provides a dimensionless value that describes the geometric elongation of the target as observed across the beams. If either Target_length_across_beams or Target_area are no_data, Target_elongation_across_beams will also be no_data.

Target elongation across beams is a useful metric for:

  • identifying targets with specific shapes or orientations as observed across beams,
  • filtering and classifying targets with irregular shapes, such as curled or bent objects,
  • improving target detection by refining criteria for differentiating target types based on their geometric properties.

This property is enabled by default for new Echoview files. For existing files, it may need to be enabled manually on the Target page of the Variable Properties dialog for the Multibeam Target Detection operator.
