Simrad EK500 and EA500 setup for Echolog 500

Ethernet Com menu

To setup the Simrad EK500 or EA500 for Echolog 500, locate the Ethernet Com menu and examine the following settings.

The remote IP address setting must be the same as that displayed in the Local IP address setting in the Echolog 500 Network Information dialog box. Modify either the EK500/EA500 value or the TCP/IP properties in the Control Panel Network applet as required.

The remote Ethernet address setting must be the same as that displayed in the Local Ethernet address setting in the Echolog 500 Network Information dialog box. Modify the EK500/EA500 value as required.

The local IP address setting must be within the same TCP/IP subnet as the IP address for the PC on which Echolog 500 is running. The EK500/EA500 cannot communicate via a router or gateway with Echolog 500 and a TCP/IP subnet is required to define the range of IP addresses that can be used for direct point-to-point communication. The subnet range is controlled by a subnet mask in TCP/IP properties. The mask number is combined with each IP address as shown in the following examples. If both results are the same then the two IP addresses are on the same subnet. Modify either the EK500/EA500 value or the TCP/IP properties in the Control Panel Network applet.

Example 1

EK500 local IP address is 192.168.1.10

PC local IP address is 192.168.1.20

PC TCP/IP subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

Both IP addresses ARE within the same subnet. Echolog 500 will be able to detect and read output from the EK500.

Example 2

EK500 local IP address is 192.168.1.10

PC local IP address is 192.168.2.10

PC TCP/IP subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

The IP addresses are NOT within the same subnet. Echolog 500 will NOT be able to detect the EK500.

Example 3

EK500 local IP address is 192.168.1.10

PC local IP address is 192.168.2.10

PC TCP/IP subnet mask is 255.255.0.0

Both IP addresses ARE within the same subnet. Echolog 500 will be able to detect and read output from the EK500.

UDP Port submenu

Locate the Ethernet Com menu, then the UDP Port submenu. For each type of telegram that the logger is required to log (for example parameter, annotation, echogram), the corresponding port number setting must be the same as that displayed in the EK500 remote port setting in the Echolog 500 Settings dialog box.

Modify the required values or the remote port setting. Echoview Software suggests setting all telegram port numbers to 2002. Do not use a port number of 2000 as this is reserved by the EK500/EA500 for receiving commands.

Set up the Ethernet echograms and select the Ethernet telegrams you wish to log.

Ensure the Vessel Log telegram is turned on because Echoview uses this telegram to determine the date (most EK500-compatible telegrams contain time but no date). If you do not have a vessel log connected to the EK500/EA500 then set up the Vessel Log menu with a simulated speed.

If you are using Echoconfig 500 you must turn on the Status telegram as Echoconfig 500 uses this telegram to determine current EK500/EA500 configuration settings.

If you are running Echolog 500 with Echosim 500 then set up the simulator and point it to the file demodata.ek5 or another data file logged from an Ex500 with Echolog 500.

If you wish to use Echodepth while logging, ensure D or Q telegrams are turned on - these contain depth information.

Synchronizing Echolog and the Echosounder

You must synchronize the echosounder and the logging PC time to better than four minutes precision. Echolog 500 will not close any current log file within five minutes of midnight to avoid incorrect date handling.

If you use an external clock with your echosounder (on the Utility menu, External clock is set to serial) then you must ensure that the Echolog 500 logging PC is synchronized to the same external clock. If the Echolog 500 PC and the EK500/EA500 do not have synchronized clocks you may experience date handling errors during live viewing. See time and date considerations for more information.

Navigation Menu

If you are recording NMEA telegrams (GPS data) through the EK500/EA500 please ensure you have the Baud rate on the Navigation Menu set at less than 2400. We have experienced problems with baud rates higher than 2400 and recommend a 1200 baud rate.

Note

There are some special requirements for running Echolog 500 and the Simrad BI500 (under UNIX) simultaneously, please contact Echoview support for details.
