Adding GPS data to an EV file

GPS data is used to (globally) position the platform that a hydroacoustic transducer is mounted upon. GPS data may record the change in position of a platform over time or record the fixed position of a platform. Echoview uses GPS data for calculations where position, displacement, speed or velocity are required. GPS data may also be used in position related calculations (e.g., solar elevation).

You can add GPS data for a moving platform from .gps.csv files to an EV file the same way you add other data files, i.e. by adding them to a fileset.

Note: This page does not cover GPS data that are derived directly from echosounder data files, e.g., GPS fixes derived from Simrad EK500 telegrams. These data are added to the EV file automatically.

Adding GPS data to a new EV file

To add GPS data to a new EV file.

  1. Create a new EV file.
  2. Click Add to display the Add Data Files dialog box.
  3. Select the .gps.csv file and click Open.

You can now create additional filesets and add data files as required.

Adding GPS data into an existing EV file

To add GPS data to an EV file when Fileset1 has been left empty, complete steps 2 and 4 of the "Adding GPS data to a new EV file" procedure described above.

To add GPS data to an EV file when Fileset1 contains data files:

  1. Save a backup copy of the EV file.
  2. Create an additional fileset.
  3. Click Add to display the Add Data Files dialog box.
  4. Select the .gps.csv file and click Open.

Adding GPS data for a fixed platform

The position of a fixed platform is specfied for a Platform object on the Dataflow window. Select a Plaform object that is linked to your acoustic data and transducer, then select Platform Properties on the right-click menu.

On the Position page of the Platform Properties dialog box, select Fixed for Platform type and enter values for latitude, longitude and attitude.
