About species

Species are used in Echoview for the purposes of biomass estimation. Each region has four basic properties:

  • ID - a unique number assigned by Echoview then the species is created. It is visible in exported analyses. You cannot alter the ID of a species once it is created.

  • Name - used to identify the species.

  • Expected mean TS - the expected mean target strength of members of this species.

  • Expected mean weight - the expected mean weight of all members of this species.

Species are defined on the Classes page of the EV File Properties dialog box and their properties assigned on the Species Properties dialog box.

Each region class defined on that same page is given a mix of species on the Species Allocation page of the Region class properties dialog box. This mix is used for estimating the biomass contained within regions of the specified class.
