Color Legend dialog box

The Color Legend dialog box displays the colors and/or symbols used in the active window and the corresponding values. The Color legend dialog box can be:

  • resized with the mouse pointer
  • closed with a window Close icon
  • opened using the echogram's Shortcut menu

The values are determined by the type of window that is displayed (see below for examples).

Note: You can leave the Color Legend dialog box open while you work and it will update automatically as you move from one window to another.

To display the Color Legend dialog box:

  1. Click the window so that it is active.
  2. On the Shortcut menu, click the Color legend tool Color legend or press the F3 key.

Right-click on the Color Legend to access the Legend's Shortcut menu. This menu both displays and can be used to change the current color scheme and color display settings. The following settings are available:

Selection

Description

Color scheme

Position the mouse pointer over Color scheme to:

  • view the current color scheme
  • view and select another color scheme from those listed.

Alternate color scheme

Select this setting to display the alternate color scheme, if it is available. The shortcut key Y will toggle between the primary and alternate color schemes.

Display minimum

Display minimum shows the value of the Color display minimum on the Echogram Display page of the Variable Properties dialog box. Use the arrows to change the Color display minimum. You may also type in new values; followed by ENTER to implement the change in the setting.

Display range

Display range shows the value of the Color display range on the Echogram Display page of the Variable Properties dialog box. Use the arrows to change the Color display range. You may also type in new values; followed by ENTER to implement the change in the setting.

Label location

Controls the display of the Color legend label. The label specifies data type and units.

  • Left of the color bar
  • Right of the color bar
  • No label

Sv color legend

This legend applies to an Sv echogram and maps Sv values in dB re 1 m-1 to colors displayed on that echogram. For a complex Sv echogram, the complex Sv values in dB re 1 m2 map to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is the color display minimum which can be altered by pressing F11 or F12 with the echogram in focus. The difference between the highest and lowest value is the color display range which can be altered by pressing SHIFT+F11 or SHIFT+F12 with the echogram in focus.

The default color scheme is a function of the type of data file the Sv variable is from. It is typically based upon the color scheme preferred by the manufacturer of the echosounder which produced the data.

TS color legend

This legend applies to a TS echogram and maps TS values in dB re 1 m2 to colors displayed on that echogram. For a complex TS echogram, the complex TS values in dB re 1 m2 map to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is the color display minimum which can be altered by pressing F11 or F12 with the echogram in focus. The difference between the highest and lowest value is the color display range which can be altered by pressing SHIFT+F11 or SHIFT+F12 with the echogram in focus.

The default color scheme is a function of the type of data file the TS variable is from. It is typically based upon the color scheme preferred by the manufacturer of the echosounder which produced the data.

The Color Legend Shortcut menu allows you to view and change the color display minimum, color display range and color scheme.

Power

This legend applies to a power echogram and maps power values (dB re 1W)  to colors displayed on that echogram. For a complex power echogram, the complex power (dB) values map to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is the color display minimum which can be altered by pressing F11 or F12 with the echogram in focus. The difference between the highest and lowest value is the color display range which can be altered by pressing SHIFT+F11 or SHIFT+F12 with the echogram in focus.

The default color scheme is a function of the type of data file the power variable is from. It is typically based upon the color scheme preferred by the manufacturer of the echosounder which produced the data.

The Color Legend Shortcut menu allows you to view and change the color display minimum, color display range and color scheme.

Angular position color legend

This legend applies to an angular position echogram and maps angle values in degrees to colors displayed on that echogram.

It is a two dimensional legend displaying a mix of two color schemes as selected on the Echogram Display page of the Variable Properties dialog box.

The default color schemes are major axis angle and minor axis angle respectively.

Single targets color legend

This legend applies to a single targets echogram and maps TS values in dB re 1 m2 to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is the color display minimum which can be altered by pressing F11 or F12 with the echogram in focus. The difference between the highest and lowest value is the color display range which can be altered by pressing SHIFT+F11 or SHIFT+F12 with the echogram in focus.

The default color scheme is a function of the type of data file the TS variable is from. It is typically based upon the color scheme preferred by the manufacturer of the echosounder which produced the data.

Unspecified dB color legend

This legend applies to an unspecified dB echogram and maps TS values in dB to colors displayed on that echogram.

Linear color legend

This legend applies to a linear echogram and maps linear values (of unspecified units) to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is the color display minimum which can be altered by pressing F11 or F12 with the echogram in focus. The difference between the highest and lowest value is the color display range which can be altered by pressing SHIFT+F11 or SHIFT+F12 with the echogram in focus.

The default color scheme is inherited from the first operand. See Inheritance of properties.

Color legend

Color echograms do not have a color legend. The Color Legend dialog box can be displayed but is blank if it applies to a Color echogram.

Boolean color legend

This legend applies to a boolean echogram and maps true and false values to colors displayed on that echogram.

Regardless of the color scheme selected, only the two extreme colors are displayed on the echogram, one for false, the other for true.

The default color scheme is boolean.

Note: If a pixel on the screen corresponds to multiple data points, that pixel is displayed using a color based on the combined "trueness" of all the data points it represents. As a result, colors other than the "true" and "false" colors may be displayed on the echogram. You can reduce the visual impact of this behavior by: selecting the Boolean color scheme, selecting a color scheme with continuous gradient between the "true" and "false" colors, or zooming in.

Current velocity color legend

This legend applies to a current velocity echogram and maps velocity values in millimeters per second to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is the color display minimum which can be altered by pressing F11 or F12 with the echogram in focus. The difference between the highest and lowest value is the color display range which can be altered by pressing SHIFT+F11 or SHIFT+F12 with the echogram in focus.

The default color scheme is velocity.

Multibeam magnitude color legends

This legend applies to a multibeam magnitude echogram (raw and beamformed) and maps magnitude values (of unspecified units) to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is the color display minimum which can be altered by pressing F11 or F12 with the echogram in focus. The difference between the highest and lowest value is the color display range which can be altered by pressing SHIFT+F11 or SHIFT+F12 with the echogram in focus.

The default color scheme is a function of the type of data file the multibeam variable is from. It is typically based upon the color scheme preferred by the manufacturer of the echosounder which produced the data.

The Color Legend Shortcut menu allows you to view and change the color display minimum, color display range and color scheme.

Multibeam Sv color legends

This legend applies to a multibeam Sv echogram and maps Sv values in dB re 1 m-1 to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is the color display minimum which can be altered by pressing F11 or F12 with the echogram in focus. The difference between the highest and lowest value is the color display range which can be altered by pressing SHIFT+F11 or SHIFT+F12 with the echogram in focus.

This legend applies to a multibeam TS echogram and maps TS values in dB re 1 m2 to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is the color display minimum which can be altered by pressing F11 or F12 with the echogram in focus. The difference between the highest and lowest value is the color display range which can be altered by pressing SHIFT+F11 or SHIFT+F12 with the echogram in focus.

The default color scheme is a function of the type of data file from which the TS variable was derived. It is typically based upon the color scheme preferred by the manufacturer of the echosounder which produced the data.

Multibeam unspecified dB color legends

This legend applies to a multibeam unspecified dB echogram and maps TS values in dB to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is the color display minimum which can be altered by pressing F11 or F12 with the echogram in focus. The difference between the highest and lowest value is the color display range which can be altered by pressing SHIFT+F11 or SHIFT+F12 with the echogram in focus.

The default color scheme is inherited from the first operand. See Inheritance of properties.

Multibeam targets color legend

This legend applies to a multibeam targets echogram and maps TS values in dB re 1 m2 to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is the color display minimum which can be altered by pressing F11 or F12 with the echogram in focus. The difference between the highest and lowest value is the color display range which can be altered by pressing SHIFT+F11 or SHIFT+F12 with the echogram in focus.

The default color scheme is a function of the type of data file the TS variable is from. It is typically based upon the color scheme preferred by the manufacturer of the echosounder which produced the data.

The Color Legend Shortcut menu allows you to view and change the color display minimum, color display range and color scheme.

Multibeam phase color legends

This legend applies to a multibeam phase echogram (raw and beamformed) and maps phase values in radians to colors displayed on that echogram.

The lowest value is -π and the highest value is π representing the full circle of phases. You cannot alter the color display range for multibeam phase echograms.

The default color scheme is multibeam phase.

Multibeam boolean color legends

This legend applies to a multibeam boolean echogram and maps true and false values to colors displayed on that echogram.

Regardless of the color scheme selected, only the two extreme colors are displayed on the echogram, one for false, the other for true.

The default color scheme is boolean.

This legend applies to the cruise track window and displays the legend of colors and symbols used to draw the cruise track.

3D color legend

This legend applies to the scene window and maps object coloring by depth values to colors displayed within the scene window.
