Echoview Configuration dialog box

The Echoview Configuration dialog box is used to set properties relating to the global (not EV file specific) operation of Echoview.

To display the Echoview Configuration dialog box:

The Echoview Configuration dialog box contains the following pages:

Select one of the following for When Echoview starts:

Setting

Description

Open AutoOpen.ev at program start up

Select this setting to open AutoOpen.EV file when you start Echoview.

Note: AutoOpen.EV must be located in the same folder as Echoview.exe or it will not be opened regardless of whether the checkbox is selected.

Check for updates at program start up Select this setting to check (via the internet) for a new version of Echoview.

Text encoding

The Text encoding setting allows Echoview to apply a specified encoding to text-based exported data. Choose the type of character encoding from the Text encoding for output files: list.

3D Preferences page

3D Mouse navigation

The settings in this area are used to customize the performance of your mouse for 3D Navigation.

Setting

Description

Horizontal sensitivity

Used to set the sensitivity of the mouse on the horizontal axis.

Vertical sensitivity

Used to set the sensitivity of the mouse on the vertical axis.

In-out sensitivity

Used to set the sensitivity of the mouse in the in-out axis.

Reverse horizontal and vertical motion

Selecting (and clearing) this option switches the relationship between mouse movements and the resulting on-screen movement, e.g. in one selection state a left movement with the mouse will result in a left movement on the screen, in the other selection state a left movement with the mouse will result in a right movement on the screen.

Defaults

Click this button to reset Echoview's default 3D mouse navigation settings.

3D display quality

Rendering 3D scenes and 3D single target graphs requires large amounts of RAM and can cause slow performance or performance problems on some machines. The 3D Visualization slider allows you to choose a display setting that is biased for better quality or better performance. Selecting a performance biased setting may reduce rendering times by up to 50% depending on your computer hardware, operating system and video card. Echoview will choose an initial setting based on the amount of RAM available to your video card, but you can change this at any time. See also 3D display problems.

Navigation

The setting Default navigation mode for (Scene) new windows can be one of three modes: Rotate, Move or Pan. Rotate is the default mode. See 3D Navigation for a description of these three modes.

File locations page

The File locations page of the Echoview Configuration dialog box is used to specify default file paths for Echoview to save files to and look for files in. The following settings are available:

Setting

Description

File Types/Location

This box displays the location when an Open, Save, Import or Export dialog box is displayed for each of the following types of file used by Echoview:

This makes it easier to find such files if you store them in a common and regular place without having regularly to navigate to that location.

Click a file type in this list to select it (see Edit and Clear below).

Notes:

  • Echoview scans for templates in the default location and in the user-defined location. To ensure Echoview only displays templates from the user-defined location, empty the default location (for templates).
  • Some of these locations may be also be used by features on the EV File page of the EV File Properties dialog box.

Edit

Click to specify the folder for a selected file type.

Clear

Click to clear the folder for a selected file type.

Use most recently accessed location for this session

If you want the Open, Save, Import or Export dialog boxes for each file type to remember the folder to which you browsed last time, and display that folder again select this option.

The first time the dialog box is displayed in any one Echoview session it will display the location defined in the File Types table above (or generally the last location used by any dialog box in Echoview if the File Types list above has no entry).

Performance page

The Performance page of the Echoview Configuration dialog box is used to specify a minimum ping generation time threshold for caching pings. Ping generation and cache statistics for your work are displayed to help you decide the minimum ping generation time to cache. The following setting is available:

Setting

Description

Auto-limit memory usage

Select Auto-limit memory usage and Limit factor (%) becomes available to set.

Clear Auto-limit memory usage and Limit (MB) becomes available to set.

Minimum time to cache (ms)

Only pings that take longer to generate than this setting will be cached.

The default is set to 0.1ms.

You may get better performance results based on system performance and data flows by increasing or decreasing this setting. The ping generation and cache statistics are provided as indicators for optimizing performance for your work.

For instance, you may want to increase this setting if the work you are doing results in large ping generation times (for example, with long virtual variable chains).

Notes:

  • The statistics shown are calculated from the time Echoview is opened to the time Echoview is closed.
  • Ping generation statistics can be viewed in the ToolTip for the relevant variable in the Dataflow window. Ping generation values for selected virtual variable objects can be reset.
  • Pings are generated in Echoview on demand; for example, when an echogram is displayed or data is exported.
  • This setting is saved to the Microsoft Windows registry and thus will continue to affect the performance of Echoview until it is changed again or the default is restored.

Scripting page

This page displays the details of the registered Echoview COM object. Displayed are details of registered COM objects found by Echoview and the version of Echoview that can be used with the COM interface.

Echoview's COM interface supports a wide range of Echoview settings and actions that you can script. For more information refer to:

Live Viewing page

The Live Viewing page of the Echoview Configuration dialog box is used to set up file management and variable displays during live viewing.

Setting

Description

Automated EV file management during live viewing

This option is designed for unattended live viewing. Rather than create a single (potentially huge) EV file, it allows you to specify that after a certain time period has elapsed, Echoview should remove some or all of the echosounder data files from the EV file, assign a new EV file name, and continue live viewing.

Warning:  If this option is not enabled, the file(s) being logged will continue to grow until they exceed available memory and Echoview will eventually crash as a result. Myriax strongly recommends you enable automated EV file management and that you enter settings that limit file size to that level that will not exceed the memory available on the logging computer.

Warning:  This option reduces, but does not eliminate the need for attended live viewing. For example, modal dialog boxes must be cleared manually or Echoview will eventually crash during live viewing. This occurs because a modal dialog box suspends automated file management and the files will continue to grow until they exceed available memory.

Retain EV files in folder

If this option is checked and a folder specified, then each of the EV files will be saved in the specified folder during live viewing. If this is not checked then the EV files will not be saved to disk.

Note: You cannot change the specified folder while live viewing. If you try to change the folder while live viewing a message will be displayed to warn you that the changes will not be applied unless you exit and restart Echoview.

Create new EV file every (hours)

Specifies the number of hours of data that can be contained in a single EV file before a new one is started.

Minimum hours overlap with previous EV file

Used to determine the number of echosounder data files to retain from the previous EV file. If this number is zero then only the current log file will be retained in the EV file and the overlap time is determined by the amount of data in the file.

Bypass Live Viewing Variables dialog box

If this option is checked, the Live viewing variables dialog box will not be displayed in Echoview when live viewing starts. Instead, the echograms for the variables checked in the scroll box will automatically be displayed when either an Echolog application is detected or live viewing is started manually. This option is useful for unattended operation or if you always wish to select the same variables for live viewing. If the live-viewing template contains virtual variables, these will be available for checking in the scroll box and will be automatically calculated and displayed if all required raw variables are present.

Note: You can disable live viewing by checking the Bypass Live Viewing Variables dialog box checkbox and clearing all variables from the selected checkbox tree control.
