Center of mass

The center of mass is calculated for 3D regions detected from multibeam data only. It is reported by three analysis variables, Mass_center_latitude, Mass_center_longitude and Mass_center_depth. Each of these is calculated in the same manner as follows.

Let A be the set of samples s in the analysis domain being considered (a 3D region). Then:

Where:

xc  = Position of the integration volume's center of mass (m or degrees)
xs  = Position of sample s (m or degrees)
svs
= Volume backscattering coefficient for sample s (m2/m3) - see Sv_mean for method of calculation.
Vs
= Volume of sample s (m3) - see Volume_integration for method of calculation.
