About WMTS maps

Web Map Tile Service (WMTS) maps are georeferenced map backgrounds delivered as image tiles from online servers. WMTS maps can be displayed as basemaps in cruisetrack windows and alongtrack views, providing spatial context for survey data.

WMTS maps are retrieved as discrete image tiles using XYZ tiling protocols. Tiles are downloaded on-demand and cached locally for subsequent use. Unlike WMS maps, WMTS maps do not support a precache option in Echoview.

The Echoview display of WMTS maps acknowledges the MapTiler copyright and OpenStreetMap contributors copyright.

WMTS map characteristics

  • WMTS maps are displayed as tiled imagery, allowing large map areas to be rendered progressively as tiles are loaded.
  • Echoview provides a selection of predefined WMTS basemaps (Satellite, Ocean, Street) from MapTiler.
  • Users can configure custom WMTS servers to use alternative tile sources.
  • Tiles are cached on disk after download, enabling offline viewing of previously accessed map areas.

Example of a WMTS map in Echoview

The following example shows a cruisetrack displayed over a WMTS Satellite basemap (sourced from MapTiler). The vessel track (in green) traverses Sydney Harbour, providing spatial context overlaid on high-resolution imagery.

Note: The visual detail and responsiveness of WMTS maps depend on tile availability, internet connectivity, and server performance. Tiles are cached locally for improved performance in subsequent views.

Adding WMTS maps to a cruisetrack

To configure a WMTS basemap in Echoview:

  1. Open the Mapping page of the EV File Properties dialog box.
  2. Under Mode, select Web Map Tile Service (WMTS).
  3. In the Tile Server section, choose a predefined basemap (Satellite, Ocean, Street) or configure a custom WMTS server.
  4. Click OK to apply the map settings.

Notes:

  • Warning: Echoview is not a navigational tool. Any map imagery is for reference only and may not display navigational hazards.
  • Custom WMTS servers must use XYZ tiling protocols to function correctly in Echoview.
  • Map tiles are cached on disk for offline access after initial download.
