Echoview and Simrad single target detection algorithms

Single target detection method 1

The single target detection algorithms implemented in the Single target detection - single beam (method 1), Single target detection - split beam (method 1) and Single target detection - dual beam (method 1) operators, are based on the phase and echo duration single target detection algorithms described in Soule et al. (1997). They describe these algorithms as those implemented in version 5.0 of the Simrad Ex500 split-beam single target detection algorithm.

When setting the (minimum) TS threshold and the Maximum Beam Compensation settings on the Single target detection page of the Variable Properties dialog box, you may wish to consider Soule et al. (1997) and their discussion regarding the effects of these settings on the thresholds used in the single target detection routine.

Echoview Software cannot guarantee an exact match between single targets detected by Echoview and the corresponding Simrad E telegram single targets. There may be small differences in the target range, target strength, normalized pulse length and number of targets detected.

Please contact Echoview support if you would like further details of algorithmic differences.

Single target detection method 2

The single target detection algorithms implemented in the Single target detection (single beam method 2), Single target detection (split beam method 2) and Single target detection - dual beam (method 2) operators implement the algorithms used by the Simrad Ex60 and EK80 echosounders.
