Calibration settings for Sonic data
This page describes the settings, necessary to an Echoview calculation, on the Calibration page of the Variable Properties dialog box for acoustic variables derived from Sonic data files.
We recommend you assess the suitability of the settings available on the Calibration pages for each acoustic variable. Some settings will be used to calculate data point values or ranges, others may be used during analysis or display of the data. The table below shows which settings are used for calculating data point values and ranges, which are used for other calculations and which settings may not be used by the variable.
Quantitative calculation/analysis requires calibrated data which is achieved using correct calibration setting values (rather than default values). An ECS file enables you to modify calibration settings for variables in a fileset.
Changes in calibration settings used for range calculations may shift ping data in the depth dimension but will not automatically adjust the position of regions and lines. You should review any existing regions and lines to ensure they are still valid. For more information refer to Range calculation effects on regions and lines.
- Data file values that have been used since the data was loaded or the ECS file was added, saved or removed are displayed in black text. Default values that have been used are displayed in orange text. Data file or ECS values that have been read but not used are displayed in grey text. Read About calibration settings for further information.
- The Echoview Data File export of Sonic data is sensitive to the values of the calibration settings TRFactor and KaijoTRFactor.
- When TRFactor and KaijoTRFactor are read from file, Echoview exports the value for TRFactor.
- TRFactor and KaijoTRFactor can have default values. If the default value for KaijoTRFactor is used, Echoview exports that value and uses it for Echoview Data File format calculations. If the default value for TRFactor is used, Echoview exports the settings used to calculate TRFactor (i.e. Frequency, TransducerGain and SoundSpeed).

Calibration settings for variables from Sonic KFC-3000, KFC-2000, KFC-1000, KFC-500 series and Sonic KFS echosounder
When data are logged with Sonic echosounders, a separate file called a parameter file is generated to correspond with each data file. The settings from the parameter file (or other settings that are correct for the data) must be determined and entered into Echoview.
Note: Sonic parameter files contain constants for only two of the four data sets that are stored in a data file for the KFC series. These four data sets are referred to as sig1 transceiver (narrow and wide) and sig2 transceiver (narrow and wide). The data may be from 38, 70, 120, or 200 kHz transceivers and you must identify them manually as this information is not stored in the underlying data files.
