Calibration page

The Calibration page of the Variable Properties dialog box or the Variable Properties - Multiple Variables Selected is displayed for acoustic variables and is used to calibrate data for the variable.

We recommend you assess the suitability of the settings available on the Calibration pages for each acoustic variable. Some settings are used to calculate data point values or ranges, others may be used during analysis or display of the data. The calibration setting can change with Echoview calculations.

Quantitative calculation/analysis requires calibrated data which is achieved using correct calibration setting values (rather than default values). An ECS file enables you to modify calibration settings for variables in a fileset. See also ECS example, calibration values used by Echoview.

The calibration settings can affect:

Check the calibration page of each variable you are working with.

  • A calibration page must be completed for each variable you are working with as the properties of all variables are independent.
  • It is advised that any transducer, referred to on the calibration page, be configured (see Transducer Properties dialog box).

Setting

Description

Transducer

Select a Transducer from the Transducer list. A Transducer object in the Dataflow window allows you to configure a transducer. The Transducer Properties allow you to record general information, and enter settings for transducer location and orientation.

Override transducer inheritance

Available only for virtual variables. Select Override transducer inheritance when you want to use a transducer other than the transducer associated with the first operand.

This setting may change when you drag and drop from a transducer node on the Dataflow window.

Note: EV files for Echoview 6.0 and earlier are updated with respect to the transducer of the first operand.

Edit the calibration file used by this fileset

This hyperlink is only active when an ECS file has been added to the fileset.

Note: An ECS file may be used by multiple EV files or multiple variables. For more information refer to Echoview Calibration Supplement files.

SourceCal

Refer to the SourceCal entry.

LocalCal

Refer to the LocalCal entry.

Settings

Displays the calibration settings that Echoview may use.

Echoview handles an extensive range of calibration settings, a complete list (including default values, units and ranges) can be found under Help menu > Calibration Information. Only a subset of these are relevant to your data. Echoview knows a setting is relevant when it reads it from a data or ECS file, or uses it in a calculation. These are the ones that were read from the variable's own calibration source in the data file, or explicitly associated with the fileset or calibration source in the ECS file.

The Variable Properties Calibration page only displays the calibration settings that are relevant to the variable's data.

The Used by pings section displays the ping range generated with the displayed calibration settings.

The Value column lists the values used in the calculation.

The Calibration file column lists the values read from the ECS file in the fileset.

The Data file column lists the values read from the data files in the fileset.

Calibration setting text color

Description

Black

A calibration setting that is set in either a data file or the ECS file, and has been used in a calculation.

Orange

A default calibration setting that Echoview has used in a calculation. The setting was not set in a data or ECS file.

Default values may make your data invalid.

Grey

A calibration setting that is set in either a data file or the ECS file, and has not been used in a calculation.

Notes:

  • The setting colors are based on the processing that has been done since the data and ECS files were last loaded. If you reload the ECS file, after changing some values for example, you may find that some settings revert to grey. This is because Echoview has not found the need to use them since the re-load. Recalculate or step through the pings in the echogram to use any newly modified settings.
  • You can Copy displayed Calibration settings and Paste them into an ECS file.
  • A warning message is sent to the Messages dialog box when the calibration settings read from the data files in the fileset vary between pings. There will then be more than one Used by pings group.

The Sonar calculator (Help menu > Sonar Calculator) can calculate Sound speed and Absorption coefficient in sea water or fresh water using well known algorithms.

Virtual variables

Virtual variables, like raw variables, must be correctly calibrated to ensure meaningful analyses. Display the Dataflow window Dataflow icon to create and use virtual variables. Calibration settings are displayed on the virtual variable's Calibration page of the Variable Properties dialog box.

Virtual variables display SourceCal settings and any applied LocalCal settings. Changes to the SourceCal (up the virtual chain) flow onto the virtual variable. Virtual variable LocalCal behavior is discussed under Inheritance of Properties. In addition, virtual variables may use particular calibration settings for display, analysis or other purposes.

Settings that may be used by a virtual variable

These settings may also be used for calculations in analyses or for other purposes. For more information on this, see Additional uses of calibration settings.

Notes:

  • The 3dB beam angle setting is generally not used for virtual variable data point calculations. However, for Single target and Target length virtual variables this setting may be important.
  • TvgRangeCorrection may be specified or applied by default for some data formats.

Settings that may be used in specific analyses of a virtual variable

These settings can affect specific analyses i.e. operations such as calculating schools analysis variables.
