Key new features and enhancements

Transects

You can now demarcate transects on your echograms or cruise tracks in Echoview.

Use this feature to constrain your analyses to the pings of an echogram or parts of a cruise track that are optimized for data collection.

A new feature that makes it easy to work with the desired parts of a dataset.
Transducer geometry

Updates to the Transducer Properties interface and transducer documentation aim to help you understand and configure transducers in a variety of configurations.

  • The new interactive image on the Transducer Properties Geometry page is designed to help you configure your transducer location and pointing directions.
  • Working with a submerged platform discusses the roles of platform, transducer, grid and echogram settings.
  • The Geometry page amalgamates settings from the Orientation and Location pages available in previous versions of Echoview.
Better transducer geometry information and feedback.
Performance

Many aspects of Echoview are now faster, allowing you to process your data more efficiently, which will be particularly evident when using a powerful computer.

More efficient workflow and time savings.

General changes

The following changes make Echoview features easier to use:

New operators and operator enhancements

Resample Multibeam Pings

Introducing the Resample Multibeam Pings operator that resamples an input variable with respect to beams, samples, range and/or sector angle. Choose from a

  • (weighted) mean
  • minimum
  • maximum
  • median or
  • percentile
for the resampling operation.

The resampled virtual variable has a fixed ping geometry across all pings, meaning you can now use other multibeam operators (e.g., Multibeam Background Removal) that require a regular ping geometry across pings.

Smooth multibeam data, regularize ping sample or beam geometry, or reduce the volume of data being processed.
Combine Fans Introducing the multibeam Combine Fans operator that combines simultaneous ping fans. It is assumed that pings are from the same transducer or that transducers are co-located. View and handle dual-head data.
Join Opposing Pings Introducing the Join Opposing Pings operator that combines ping data from two transducers pointing in opposite directions. Create a qualitative data set from opposed transducers.
Background Noise Estimation The Background noise estimation operator now offers output with or without applied time varied gain (TVG). Without applied TVG, to the Sv or TS output, the echogram value is a single per ping estimate of background noise. Calculation flexibility minimizes processing steps further on.
Deadzone Estimation The Deadzone Estimation operator now only accepts Sv variables as the input. Previously it also accepted TS inputs. More physically meaningful echo-integration computation.
Ping time difference Introducing the Ping time difference operator that visualizes the time between pings. Visualization and filtering.

Code

New ping navigation attributes. We have added these attributes to the Measurement class for the Code operator.

  • gps_latitude
  • gps_longitude
  • heading
  • speed
  • vl_distance
Expanded functionality for the Code operator.

Vessel speed at pings

The Vessel speed at pings operator now supports multibeam operands.

Visualization and filtering.

Scripting and COM objects

For more information about the COM objects refer to Scripting with COM objects.

Command interface

The Echoview Command interface allows you to access Echoview properties and actions. Use the Console window to immediately interact with the Command interface. Use a script to execute batch commands.

Support includes:

Note: We strongly recommend checking that any scripts written for previous versions of Echoview that include EvApp.Exec content still works as expected. We also recommend you incorporate built-in scripting safeguards that will report any errors that may occur.

Transect groups

COM object EvTransectGroup supports

  • exporting transect groups to a .transect.csv file
  • getting or setting the name of the transect group
  • getting or setting the notes for the transect group

Platform

COM object COM object EvPlatform supports the TransectSource class to assign a transect group to the platform.

Fileset adjust time

COM support to Fileset Properties Adjust time modes and Specify start time:

Delete existing regions

Delete existing regions support for:

Close windows

The feature Window menu, Close All, WindowType is now supported by these COM methods and enum:

Documentation changes

Submerged platforms The Working with a submerged platform page discusses the configuration of settings for the Platform, Transducer and echogram to work with fixed or moving submerged platforms. The page is supported by the streamlining and visualization changes for Transducer Geometry Properties and new illustrations for the examples on the About transducer geometry page.

Windows 8.1 no longer supported

Echoview computer requirements have been updated for Windows 8.1 (64-bit Edition) which is no longer supported by Microsoft.

ICES Sonar-netCDF4

Breaks in lines

Updated documentation about Echoview handling for breaks in lines.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed a bug associated with incorrectly applying TVG at less than 1 m when it is not calculated. The bug affected the Background noise removal operator.
  • Fixed a time conversion issue from one time sub-unit to the next unit. For example 08:59:58.999 incorrectly incrementing to 08:59:58.1000. This sometimes occurred while undertaking Export To Image and within the exported data of a Export, Analysis by Cells, To ICES CSV operation.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the EvSpeciesCollection properties and methods to work erratically. The bug appeared in Echoview 8.
  • Fixed a Trained model bottom exclusion bug associated with handling of data for multithreaded processing.
  • Fixed a dataflow object ungrouping bug. Previously, updating an object's on screen data while ungrouping the dataflow object would crash Echoview.
  • Bounding boxes for scenes now update when overwriting a detected bottom surface. (See also the workaround for EV files with saved out of date bounding boxes.)
  • Fixed a 3D region and 2D region handling bug that affected Echoview's performance, making it unresponsive.
  • Fixed an XxYxZ Statistic bug that affected median and percentile calculations handling -999dB or no data edge samples.
  • Fixed a multibeam and single beam synchronization bug where synchronization may have been erratic or unexpected with respect to ping range. See also Synchronization notes.
